Plan for how the yard is used at night

Start With Where You Spend the Evening

Lighting works best when it follows the routes and gathering spots you already use. We start by walking the space with you and noting where people sit, cook, and move between the house and the yard after sunset.

From there we decide which areas need light to be safe and which need light to look good. Steps and walks need clear, even light. A wall, a tree, or a water feature may only need a soft accent so the yard does not feel flooded.

Light for Patios, Kitchens, and Covered Spaces

A patio that goes dark at sundown loses much of its use in summer. Lighting a dining area, a cooking counter, or the ceiling of a pergola or pavilion lets you keep using the space after dinner.

When lighting is planned with the hardscape, fixture locations and wiring routes can be worked out before the stone goes down. Our landscaper design-and-build services cover the patios, walls, and outdoor rooms these lights are built around.

Lights set into a seat wall or a step riser are a good example. They light the walking surface without putting a fixture in anyone’s eyes.

Lighting Around Water

Water looks different after dark. Light on moving water, or on the stone wall beside it, gives the yard a focal point you can see from inside the house.

Pool and pond lighting is planned with the water feature itself, so fixtures sit where they show the water and stay out of the way. See our pond contractor services if a pond, stream, or fountain is part of your plan.

Front Walks, Driveways, and the House

The front of the house is what guests see first at night. Exterior wall lighting, walkway lights, and driveway lighting help people find the door and make the path to it easier to walk.

Up-lighting and down-lighting on existing trees and shrubs adds depth, so the house does not sit in one bright spot surrounded by dark yard.
